In 1997, she flew into space aboard the space shuttle Columbia, spending sixteen days conducting experiments and capturing the beauty of Earth. Kalpana made history as the first Indian woman in space and inspired many to follow their dreams. Tragically, the shuttle broke apart during reentry in 2003, resulting in the loss of Kalpana and her crewmates. Despite her untimely death, Kalpana’s legacy lives on and she continues to inspire others to never give up.
