Five activities based around the DERIC reading skills; decode, explain, retrieve, interpret and choice using the text Ruby’s Worry by Tom Percival.
These first five activities include;
- Exploring vocabulary relating to the word ‘worry’ and ‘explore’ using a word map, including exploring definitions, synonyms and antonyms and putting the word into context.
- Retrieval of information from the front cover to help predict what is going to happen in the story and look at key features such as the author and illustrator.
- PSHE/PSED work to support emotions of ‘worry’ including exploring a letter from the author to the reader and a ‘thinking mind map’ to help children deal with any worries that may be ‘stuck to them’.
- Exploring the author’s choices, why did he choose to write a letter to his readers?
- Decoding activities including read and draws to build fluency and put phonics into practice!
- KS1 SATs style questions to help children become more familiar with how these look and how to answer them.
