This resource includes six video clips, each with beautiful vivid multi-coloured fringe patterns.

The video clips demonstrate how repeated loading of transparent plastic models produces dynamically changing coloured fringe patterns.

The fringe patterns represent the internal stresses in the material of each of the loaded test pieces, resulting from the application of load.l

This helps children to understand that forces produce stresses in objects and the material of which the object is made, needs to be strong enough to sustain the loading and resulting internal stresses, so as to avoid fracture of the object.

The video clips will be useful for the teacher to view immediately prior to teaching the topic, and will also be suitable for use in the classroom.
