Make reading fun by using this easy-prep summer Scavenger Hunt comprehension activity with a seaside theme. Your Key Stage 2 students will work individually, in pairs or small groups and use their reading skills to answer questions, unscramble the mystery words and crack the code.

This engaging activity is perfect for using comprehension skills to find the answers and be the first to unlock the secret 4-digit code. Players use the cards to read short passages and find out about things that they might find on the beach - starfish, sand, hermit crabs etc.

There are questions to be answered but they are on different cards therefore it is important to understand and remember what they have read. The answers are code words which will lead to letters to be unscrambled to lead to a mystery location.

Who will be the first to find this? This activity makes reading and understanding fun and the competitive element will engage students.

You will get:
  • 10 cards with a short passage to read and a question that relates to another card so students must understand and remember what they have read
  • Answer record sheet for each player or team - use the answers to find letters to unscramble and find the mystery location and crack the 4-digit code
  • a short introduction to set the scene
  • answers for you to assess instantly if they are correct or not
  • seaside themed winners’ certificates
  • directions
  • The themes of the readings are all related to the seaside so ideal for summer

Prep is easy and quick – print & cut the cards into 2 and distribute these around the classroom or table and you are ready for a fun and engaging lesson.

Great for you:
  • Low-prep
  • Ideal for your literacy and summer centres
  • Great as independent activities in a literacy lesson
  • Ideal if you need a quick resource
These activities are suggested for Key Stage 2 – in particular Years 4 & 5 but may also be suitable for other years
Great for your students:
  • Gives students opportunities to read carefully and remember what they have read
  • The challenge to find the mystery location and crack the 4-digit code will engage them
  • Great for working together

Make it more interesting by using a 4-digit lock and pre-setting the numbers to this code. It could even open a ‘treasure box’ with a prize inside: a seashell, sand, a picture, etc.
