In-line with the revised OFSTED framework, this scheme of learning has been designed to provide the students with a more enriching, non-linear experience. The project has been carefully mapped against the new KS3 national curriculum and it has been sequenced to engage students and introduce them to the iterative design process.

The scheme is a scenario focussed ‘puzzle game’ project covering 19 lessons suitable for delivery in Year 7 or Year 8. An extensive, editable project booklet is included, alongside linked PowerPoint presentations to support your delivery.

The project places a particular focus on problem solving skills whilst exploring sustainability, 2D /3D drawing techniques. Opportunities to improve maths and literacy stamina are also included.

Assessment has been embedded to complement the four main sections of the GCSE specifications (Investigate, Design, Make, Evaluate) and success criteria has been included for each stage to encourage student ownership and independence.

I am a new Head of Faculty and I recently undertook a complete rebranding of the department and this project is currently being delivered in Year 8 at my school. Hence, all logos and branding can be tailored to your own school.
To follow this, I would recommend my ‘sleep deprivation’ project which is also available on TES. I currently deliver this to Year 9, in preparation for their option choices.
The booklet also provides numerous opportunities for students to be stretched using upgrade tasks.

Each lesson has specific knowledge and skills as a focus, as follows:

  1. Problem solving
  2. Problem identification
  3. Product analysis
  4. Timber research
  5. Sustainable design
  6. Life cycle assessment
  7. Heatherwick Studio sketching
  8. Isometric drawing
  9. Isometric drawing
  10. Isometric drawing
  11. Marking out timber
  12. Sawing timber + quality control
  13. Adhesives
  14. Workshop tools + puzzle manufacture
  15. Production scales + puzzle manufacture
  16. Finishing
  17. Project evaluation
  18. Knowledge recall task
  19. Team quiz
