In-line with the revised OFSTED framework, this scheme of learning has been designed to provide the students with a more enriching, non-linear, iterative experience. The project has been carefully mapped against the new KS3 national curriculum and it has been sequenced to engage students and secure their knowledge of the iterative design process.

The scheme is a scenario focussed ‘night light’ project covering 19 lessons, suitable for delivery in Year 8 or 9. An extensive, editable project booklet is included, alongside linked PowerPoint presentations to support your delivery.

The project places a particular focus on the design process, almost like a mini NEA, whilst exploring model making (CAD and Card), 2D /3D drawing techniques, electronics, project planning and quality control. Opportunities to improve maths and literacy stamina are also included.

Assessment has been embedded to complement the four main sections of the GCSE specifications (Investigate, Design, Make, Evaluate) and success criteria has been included for each stage to encourage student ownership and independence.

I am a new Head of Faculty and I recently undertook a complete rebranding of the department and this project is currently being delivered in Year 8 at my school. Hence, all logos and branding can be tailored to your own school.

To compliment this scheme, I would recommend my ‘screen addiction’ project for Year 7 or 8 which is also available on TES.

The booklet also provides numerous opportunities for students to be stretched using upgrade tasks.

This project uses the USB colour changing LED kit purchased from Kitronik.

Each lesson has specific knowledge and skills as a focus, as follows:

  1. Task analysis
  2. Client profile
  3. Mood board
  4. Materials investigation
  5. Situation need + design brief
  6. Design specification
  7. Initial sketches (2D)
  8. Iterative development (2D)
  9. Final design review (2D + 3D)
  10. Card modelling
  11. CAD modelling
  12. CAD 2D design
  13. Electronic systems
  14. Electronic processes
  15. Quality control
  16. Finishing
  17. Project diary
  18. Testing and evaluation
  19. End-of-project test
