These materials are for a lesson on a study of language and gender - looking at how men and women use language differently.
Ideally, students will have prior knowledge of Gender Theory but an able class may be able to learn from the handout on Gender Representation Theory with some teacher interaction.
As a warm-up activity, using their knowledge of Gender Theory, the students will then discuss and annotate the transcript from Lucy and Jon.
After that, they are ready to do their own research/ case study on language and gender. You will need to give the students the case study worksheet and put them into groups. Each group will have the Desert Island Decision or Decorating Bedroom activity. You will need volunteers of both genders from another class or Year group who know nothing about Gender Theory or what you are doing in class. The idea is that your students observe the volunteers talking and make notes on their language from a gender perspective. These notes should be made on the case study observation sheet and discussed as a class afterward.
I did this with a Year 11 class and they had a lot of fun as well as learn about language and gender.
