Lesson and resources for a ‘How can we challenge Holocaust Denial?’
Ideal lesson to include at the end of a scheme of work on the Nazis and the Holocaust.
Aimed at Y9 - lesson can be used as teacher led, or used as individual, pair, or group work.
Format:
- Retrieval questions on the Holocaust
- 3 minute video link from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum with a historian explaining what Holocaust Denial is
- Group reading and summarising activity to make a definition for the term ‘Holocaust Denial’
- Main activity is using historical sources to challenge common holocaust denial claim. Sources include primary sources such as speeches and diaries of politicians, secondary sources including information from the USHMM and survivors.
- Students can either work independently, in pairs/groups, or this can be done as a class. Students must use the sources to explain why denier claims are clearly false.
- Plenary activity on why it is important to remember the Holocaust and challenge anyone who denies it
