This engaging marketplace activity has been designed to help students work cooperatively while researching the key stages in Adolf Hitler’s life from 1889 to 1933. It is ideal for promoting collaborative learning, speaking and listening skills, and independent enquiry—making it an excellent choice for observation lessons or for strengthening group-work routines at KS3 or KS4.
The resource includes a detailed PowerPoint containing carefully selected information and sources for each key stage of Hitler’s early life: 1889–1909, 1909–1913, 1913–1918, 1918–1923 and 1923–1932. These sheets can be printed in A3 and distributed to groups, placed on tables or displayed around the room as part of a classic marketplace setup. An optional student recording sheet is also provided to support note-taking and ensure purposeful movement during the activity.
The lesson begins with a snowballing key-words starter designed to activate prior knowledge. The main marketplace task can be delivered in two different ways, giving you flexibility depending on your class: either groups rotate around the information stations, gathering five key facts from each stage of Hitler’s life, or one spokesperson from each group rotates to share their findings with others. Both versions place a strong emphasis on cooperation, communication and active learning. Students not only build an overview of Hitler’s early life and beliefs but also develop essential enquiry and speaking skills.
The plenary encourages students to link Hitler’s emerging ideas to different stages in his life. This is deliberately open-ended to encourage debate rather than fixed answers. A second discussion question explores the reasons why Germans later voted for Hitler, including themes such as jobs, bread, the Treaty of Versailles, revenge and Anti-Semitism—providing a meaningful bridge into later GCSE content.
