Make subitizing and counting numbers up to 10, adding and reading (number) words fun by using this easy-prep maths 4th of July resource. Your early years students can play math games such as Memory, Pairs and Snap in small groups or individually and use their mathematics skills to count, subitize, read number words and find the matching numeral to the quantity they have counted.
This resource is ideal for celebrating the 4th of July with red, blue and white stars and stripes for counting, but it can be used throughout the year.
Most young children love games and these resources lend themselves well to playing popular games practicing key math skills and recognising numerals, addition to 10 and reading words. Students can play this as part of their CHIL, or child-initiated independent learning activities or as part of a maths lesson.
Decide whether you would like your students to count, add or read and put the relevant cards in your tuff tray to encourage these key mathematical skills or use them for your maths lesson or table.
Ask questions such as:
How many stars/ stripes can you ‘see’ without counting - subitizing?
Is it easier to ‘see’ if you see them in groups e.g. a 3 and a 4?
Can you make a sum using the cards and symbols and show me 3 + 4 = ?using the numbers or the pictures - addition skills?
Can you read the words and match them to the numerals?

You will get cards with:
  • 0-10 numerals
  • 0-10 stars for counting
  • 0-10 stripes for counting
  • Zero to ten in words
  • Stars and stripes on 1 card to add 2 quantities together
  • Matching addition sums to recognize and find
  • 12 subtraction sums to find the equivalent pictures or answers for (2 for answers 1 and 5)
  • notes
  • patterns for the backs of the cards
Great for you:
  • Prep is easy and quick - print, cut up the cards and you are ready for a fun and engaging lesson.
  • Ideal for your math and 4th of July-themed centres
  • Great as independent activities in a math lesson
  • Ideal if you need a quick resource e.g. for substitute days
  • Great for extra counting practice
Great for your students:
  • Gives students opportunities to count carefully and subitize
  • Count together and discuss the final number being the total number
  • Add 2 quantities together and recognize the matching sum - seeing this as a written sum is an important step up from seeing the objects
  • Have fun with math
  • Read number words
