Maundy Thursday

A useful summary sheet as I am trying to remind students that Jesus was Jewish and would follow Jewish customs.

Useful resource but some important events have been missed out which is a pity. Can you at least add the prayer, 'Not my will but Thine be done' as many would argue that this is one of the most important Christian prayers. </p> Another event to mention is the way that the close disciples were so weak and full of human failings that they fell asleep when Jesus had asked them to pray/stay awake with him. There is a tendency to view the disciples who Jesus chose to be his apostles as 'divine beings' who belong perhaps on stained glass windows - but events like these show that they were very much like us. </p> Peter's promise and the way he followed Jesus even though this was dangerous - leading on to his denial is another significant event. It is easy to bring in some AT2 here. When have we tried to do something difficult and not been strong enough or brave enough to see it through? How does one grow inwardly or spiritually stronger and develop more inner courage? What examples can we think of which show someone who has managed to remain faithful and strong, despite great difficulty or danger? </p> And a personal favourite is the incident only mentioned in Mark - where a young lad wrapped in a blanket followed Jesus. When the guards tried to arrest him he wriggled free, leaving them with the blanket and running away naked. Most scholars believe that this lad was the young Mark who later wrote that Gospel. </p> There is so much in the story of Maundy Thursday. I do appreciate that you have to be selective, but if you are taking the account up to the arrest of Jesus, then I think it would be a shame not to include a few more of the important, significant and colourful events.
