This PowerPoint lesson guides the A Level class through the opening scene of Measure for Measure, introducing them to close study of Shakespeare’s language in extract form. It also provides some early context on James I, kingship and the metaphor (both courtly and theatrically) of staging the monarch. The class is reminded of the workings of blank verse and given some more insights into how blank verse and prose are deployed by Shakespeare to indicate character, class, levels of humour and rhetorical tension. This lesson forms LESSON 1 in a sequence of lessons designed to prepare students taking the OCR and AQA courses at A Level in 2022, working towards full understanding of the advance-notice focus scenes from Acts 1 and 3. 19 slides.
