This PowerPoint lesson guides the class through the contextual parallels between the city of Vienna (setting) and the City/suburbs of London. Act 1 scene 2 introduces Lucio and his ability to move between words (and between verse and prose) as well as the brothel characters, Mistress Overdone and Pompey. The lesson explores the language of these characters (in prose, with puns, double entendre as well as comment about their livelihoods) and the mood that is created - on the one hand the lighthearted bantering about sex work and on the other the very serious consequences of Angelo’s reforms. The lesson includes detailed notes on the the dialogue as well as a series of questions to secure learning. Two research tasks are included to encourage wider contextual understanding. 18 slides.
