This PowerPoint lesson guides the class through the Duke’s presentation of his rule and the reasons for his retreat, disguise and positioning of Angelo in his place. The lesson introduces the necessity for critical readings (other interpretations) as well as provides more context on rule/leadership/monarchy by presenting highlighted extracts from the King’s 1599 manual (reprinted in 1603) Basilikon Doron. The class is encouraged to consider the Duke’s presentation in the light of that document, as well as to understand the various roles he will fulfil in the play, not least of which being in the ‘Stage Duke’ as well as a representative of good rule, judge and justice and humanitarian father-figure. The lesson closes with some consideration of the examination requirements for 2022. 19 slides.
