This is a HUGE (well over 100+ pages) Stage Two unit of work based on the brilliant book “Are We There Yet” by Alison Lester.
This book was used as part of an integrated English/Geography unit based on the strand “Places are Similar and Different” which requires Stage 2 students to compare and contrast different Australian landscapes (including vegetation, flora, fauna etc). This book is perfect for this purpose, as it tells the story of a real-life journey around Australia, travelling through places as diverse as Tasmania, the Outback, the Daintree Rainforest and more.
The is a mammoth unit of work. It contains everything needed to teach this book, based on the “A Book a Week” model. This model requires students to explore a book at a deep level across all the elements of the Literacy block - Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.
I used this book as a mentor text for students to create a persuasive text - a brochure convincing readers to visit a particular area of Australia. This book was an excellent mentor text as it uses rich, descriptive language and many examples of figurative language.
The unit includes:
-
All relevant curriculum links for Stage Two - both ACARA (version 9) and NESA (new syllabus).
-
An in-depth (17-page) lesson guide with everything needed to teach the unit. There are also examples from my own classroom. This includes a detailed persuasive writing unit of work.
-
A structured speaking and listening guide with interactive prompts to guide oral language development.
-
A comprehensive shared reading slideshow with particular focal points on: comprehension (literal, inferential and text-to-self), vocabulary and figurative language.
-
A set of ten full-colour Literature Circle task cards with a range of activities, designed for independent consolidation work. All tasks are based on “Are We There Yet?” and the integrate the Creative Arts, designing, researching, grammar and much more.
-
A set of ten printable worksheets, all based on “Are We There Yet”?
-
A planning template for students.
-
A bonus set of blank foldable brochure templates, which can be used with any future writing project as well.
-
A blank wall display based on “Are We There Yet?”
By the end of this unit of work, students will not only have a comprehensive understanding of the book, but a series of completed literacy centre tasks and a published persuasive text.
I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them based on Australian texts) so feel free to check them out.
Happy reading!
