Memory: active recall starter activity. Based on ‘Beat the clock’ from The Language Teacher Toolkit (Smith, Conti).
Description:
This can be used as a starter, filler or plenary and is extremely simple and effective for beginners. Write on the board or display a selection of words or phrases you wish students to revise. Tell them they have two minutes to look carefully at the words. Once the two minutes are up, cover the words or phrases and set a timer. Give the students as long as you see fit to write down as many of the words as possible from memory. Students score two points for each correctly spelled word or phrase, one for any incorrectly spelled. With some classes you may only accept completely accurate spellings. An alternative to this activity is to read out a list of words instead of displaying them. Read the words slowly two or three times.
