This is a 60+ page novel study on the classic Australian book “Mrs Whitlam” by Bruce Pascoe.

Mrs Whitlam tells the story of Marnie, a young Indigenous girl who is given the wonderful, but tragic gift of a horse called Margaret Whitlam. Mrs Whitlam - or Maggie - was a horse which belonged to as classmate of Marnie’s who died in a car accident. This is a story of bravery, healing and hope.

This resource consists of a chapter-by-chapter comprehension guide. The questions cover a range of comprehension skills, from literal to inferential, plus author purpose, comparing and contrasting, summarising, predicting and much more. A comprehensive answer guide is also provided.

Each section also has a creative response, designed to be high-interest, independent and engaging. These are often linked to the Creative and Practical Arts.

This book would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud, or as a reading group text for a Stage Two or Stage Three cohort.

There is a bank of ten Literacy Circle tasks, designed to be printed and laminated for future use. These involve a high degree of student choice, so as to be independent. All associated printables are also included.

Also included is a comprehensive slideshow which makes connection between Indigenous history and Gough Whitlam - the Wave Hill Walk-off. It explains the role the Whitlam family had in the progression towards reconciliation.
