This is a 180±page complete three week shared reading unit based on the Nature Series by Claire Saxby. The three books included are: Emu, Dingo and Great White Shark.

This is a unit of work I created to support the teaching of the Stage Two Science unit “Living World”, which requires students to reflect upon life cycles. These texts are perfect to support the teaching of this unit.

This unit has everything required to teach your reading program for three weeks, including independent group tasks.

This unit of work is part of a much larger unit, focussing on the texts of Claire Saxby. Students examine three animal-based texts and use this as a mentor text to create a hybrid text of their own.

Each unit of work includes:

  • all curriculum links, both ACARA and NESA. English curriculum links are included, as well as HASS/HSIE.

  • a detailed lesson guide, outlining everything you need to teach the unit. This is a step-by-step daily lesson plan, with work samples, tips and suggestions and more.

  • embedded oral language prompts, based on the texts.

  • a comprehensive shared reading supporting slideshow, containing lots of visual supports. This includes comprehension questions (both literal and inferential, and text-to-self).

  • a full-colour background to each text.

  • 24 high-interest literature centre task cards (8 for each book). These are designed to be engaging and fun with a high degree of student choice, so as to allow for independent work. Tasks incorporate areas such as research, designing, the Creative Arts and more. There are also imaginative, informative and persuasive written tasks based on each book.

  • Additional focus lessons - vocabulary, language, predicting and more.

I have many other literature based resources in my store. Please feel free to check them out.

Happy reading!
