This is a series of resources to support the teaching of the beautiful Australian picture book “Opal and Dart” by Vianne Brain and Clare Bradley. This book was included on the CBCA shortlist in the Eve Pownall category for Informative Texts.
It tells the story of the migration of Opal and Dart, two swallows who face many challenges along their journey. It is a hybrid informative/imaginative text and teaches student not only about the life cycle of Australian swallows, but the dangers of introduced species as well.
This text is perfect to support the teaching of a huge range of biological science units, including those covering life cycles (Stage One), habitats (Stage Two) and animal adaptations and migrations (Stage Three).
This resource includes:
-
Three differentiated comprehension guides, which are appropriate for all ages between Years One-Six. The range of levels also allow for in-class differentiation as well. Many different comprehension strategies are targeted: literal and inferential, as well as cause and effect, author purpose, making connections and more.
-
A set of 8 full-colour literature circle task cards related to the text. These tasks are designed to be completely independent and allow for an element of student choice. Informative, imaginative and persuasive writing prompts are included, as well as creative and practical arts activities.
-
All associated printables linked to the task cards. These are open-ended and can be applied to multiple texts.
-
A vocabulary booster designed to explicitly teach both word-building skills and the specific rich language of the text.
