This bundle covers the topic “order of operations” with 16 sets of differentiated worksheets, starting with simple combinations of addition and subtraction or multiplication and division to numerical expressions containing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, parentheses, exponents to simplifying and converting word problems to numerical statements and solving them.
It follows well known acronyms outlining the sequence in which operations should be performed, all representing the same fundamental order of operations.
BODMAS - United Kingdom and Australia
PEMDAS - USA
BEDMAS - Canada and New Zealand
Part 1 without Exponents
Set 1: Combining 3 or more numbers with addition & subtraction and separately multiplication & division, to help reinforce and extend your students’ understanding of these primary operations.
Set 2: Introducing brackets to show how they affect the outcome of a calculation, again keeping expressions with addition & subtraction separate from multiplication & division.
Set 3: The four basic operations are now combined in each question, introducing the practice of calculating multiplication and division before addition and subtraction.
Set 4: Every pair of questions has the same numbers & operations but one has a parenthesis added in, to show the effect of its inclusion.
Set 5: All questions now have a mix of the 4 operations and parentheses combining all the practice and skills of the previous 4 sets.
Set 6: A challenge. Students are presented with numerical equations that need a parenthesis to be added to make the equations true.
Set 7: Translating word based problems into numerical statements and solving them.
Set 8: Practical, real life problems requiring translation into numerical statements, and solving.
Part 2 with Exponents
Set 1: We begin by reviewing the order of operations without exponents.
Set 2: Exponents are introduced into numerical expressions either a mix of addition and subtraction or multiplication without brackets.
Set 3: Brackets are now added into numerical expressions either a mix of addition and subtraction or multiplication and division.
Set 4: Each question contains all the elements of BODMAS except brackets using 3 to 6 numbers.
Set 5: Each question contains all the elements of BODMAS again using 3 to 6 numbers.
Set 6: Challenge 1. Students are presented with numerical equations that need a parenthesis to be added to make the equations true.
Set 7: Challenge 2. Each question now has 6 or 7 digits and all the elements of BODMAS.
Set 8: Challenge 3. Word based problems need to be translated into numerical expressions and solved.
All calculations should be possible without the aid of a calculator.
