Approx 2 lessons on ‘how did the universe come to be?’, meeting the learning objective: to know different beliefs and interpretations about the origins of the universe, including scientific and religious views.
Pupils first look at and interpret cartoons about creation and explore their own views on how the universe came to be. A brief video is watched with Brian Cox discussing the Big Bang theory (the link is on the PPT).
Pupils then look at the views of John Polkinghorne and Philip Gosse, and then complete a template of a 3D world with the beliefs/ideas that they need to know (e.g. the Big Bang, creation story, literal/liberal views etc) using the AQA Christianity GCSE textbook to gather the information. They can then make their 3D worlds. Lesson then recaps these ideas, with the possibility of then completing or responding to a 12 mark question statement.
Resources included: PPT, lesson plan, 3D world template (will need to be copied onto A3 paper), creation cartoons
