This series of handouts / lessons was written for a Year 9 English class studying Gender. The 6 page handout includes 3 worksheets and detailed lesson plan.
CONTENT
With the assistance of handouts, and viewing activity students will examine ideas about gender roles in contemporary society. Students will need to use critical thinking skills questioning the use of media to enforce societal perceptions of gender.
Step 1- Handout 1 - paired activity on word association. Students in pairs work through the two-page word list examining word association with gender.
Step 2: Handout 2 - Each student has a copy of the Mind Map activity. Students to complete the Mind Map – Question prompts assist in completion.
Students to share responses with class and teacher.
Step 3: Handout 3 - Class examination of Gender Advertising. From a young age we are exposed to media /marketing to sell products to a particular audience.
Students view – Gendered Marketing in Moonsand.
Students collect information in the table provided, Handout 3. The distinction in marketing to a gendered audience is very obvious but makes for a great discussion.
Optional Writing Activity Step 4: A letter of complaint - Scaffold writing prompts included.
