This resource contains the persuasive letter written by Marcus Rashford to MPs in 2020 highlighting his concerns regarding the lack of free school meals during the Covid 19 pandemic. This is suitable for Year 10 students who need to learn/refresh their persuasive writing skills. It was developed in preparation for the iGCSE English language exam, however, would be suitable for any other exams requiring students to write persuasively.
The first 2 pages contain an abridged version of the letter where students can identify a number of persuasive techniques. This highlights the fact that these techniques are actually used in real life, not just in exams. The next page contains a few simple comprehension questions to test their understanding of the letter and they can then go on the analyse the effects of the techniques in the form of PEE paragraphs. The final task asks students to write their own persuasive letter on a topic that they believe needs addressing. This has purposefully been left opened ended so that it can be adapted to suit whatever is currently happening and topical in your location.
This whole pack could be delivered over 3-4 lessons.
