I've been a primary school teacher in the UK for over 16 years and most of that time has been spent teaching Year 6. I am passionate about English and inspiring children through creative writing. However, I do believe it is important to give them a good grounding in grammar but believe this can be taught through engaging and creative texts. I use a mixture of techniques including from Talk for Writing and Power of Reading, but don't stick rigidly to their principles.
This is a poetry lesson which is written from the viewpoint of a blue whale. It focuses on the importance of language choice and structure. It is suitable for upper KS2 and ties in well with topics concerning Environmental Awareness and Citizenship. I find poetry a great starting point for fiction writing.
