Pornography and its impact on relationships RSE PSHE for Year 9/ Year 10
Part of the new RSE aspect of PSHE - to be delivered from 2020
The lesson lasts around 30 mins - possibly longer if students develop discussion. It is suitable for both genders. There are no written activities but you could adapt the discussions into writing if preferred. There’s a mix of debate, direct information, video observation, scenarios and how to get help. There’s a link to recent research suggesting that a significant number of young girls are subjected to harassment, being asked for pictures to be sent etc.
In this lessons, students will learn:
What pornography is; the qualities of a healthy sexual relationship; how pornography distorts that picture; how pornography can create a damaging view of others and encourage a poor self image. There’s also advice for how to help and where to seek support if needed.
There’s obviously no pornography in the lesson (!) but it is quite direct so teachers should familiarise themselves in advance with the content and SEN students may need additional support.
