In the Red section, students are given two surds and have to add them to fill in the top answer and multiply them to fill in the bottom answer.
In the Amber section, students are given just one surd from the middle and either the sum or the product meaning they will have to subtract or divide to find the missing surds from the middle. This gives students practice rationalising the denominator.
In the Green section, students are given just the sum and the product and have to determine what the two surds from the middle are. This is quite challenging but the students can find solutions using trial and error, thinking of two coefficients that add to give the coefficient in the sum (the surd part is the same in each question) and seeing if that makes the correct product at the bottom.
