The ‘Questions to ask about our learning today’ poster represents a series of guiding questions to support creating a learning environment which is inclusive, supports critical thinking and encourages students to bring their knowledge, cultural expertise, and lived experiences into the geography classroom.

Students are guided to:

  • respect the diversity of the world
  • represent people and places equitably
  • champion the inclusion of different thoughts and experiences
  • and provide justice for communities which have been harmed by misrepresentation and minimisation in the past

Presented as a simple reflective checklist, these questions can be used by students as they engage with their learning or by teachers while designing lessons to ensure consideration of their students and community when they seek to teach unfamiliar topics.

The questions reflect strategies employed in Anti-Racist pedagogies and strategies to Decolonise Geography championed by the group decolonisegeography dot com. Teachers and educators are encouraged to read deeply into these topics as part of becoming inclusive teachers who can contribute to the destabilisation of norms and biases which can be reproduced in the geography classroom.

Although targeting geographical learning, as classrooms become increasingly diverse, these questions can be applied to all learning settings to support the safety and inclusion of all.
