This PowerPoint will motivate student interest in the understanding of ratio, since 4 of the 6 situations considered are about the making of food and drink that they will all be familiar with.
The situations are :- Mixing fruit cordial, Making berry smoothies, Making Jam, Making gingerbread men, Mixing mortar, and Mixing green paint.
Mixing Fruit cordial 1:4 is used as the initial example, then 4 situations for students to calculate quantities which are copied on a worksheet that I use in class, answers appear individually on the slides. The making gingerbread men table is produced on a second worksheet that I use as homework (2 copies on an A4 sheet) answers appear in sets of 5 for each of the number of biscuits.
The term Direct Proportion is introduced as the equivalent of ratio when more components are involved, and a balance must be maintained.
