Set of 24 comprehension questions (plus extensions) on Shirley Jackson’s 1948 short story ‘The Lottery’. The activity will last approximately one lesson.

The questions are divided into six sets, each with a different theme/point of focus. Each set also contains a ‘bonus question’ which can be used as extension work.

The activity could be used as group work or could be worked through individually:

  • Small group option: Each group receives a ‘mission’ (one set of questions) to complete. After each group has had 15 minutes or so to find the answers, they can then present their answers to the rest of the class (page 3 of the workbook gives students a space to write up findings from the other groups).

  • Individual option: Students can either work through all the questions, or perhaps focus on one or two of the ‘missions’, depending on their ability.

*This activity is from a larger Student Workbook which can be purchased (along with the answers to the questions and Teacher Notes) from my TES shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/resource-12752108
