Khruschev and the Thaw. Video worksheets, differentiated.

Was the leader of the USSR trying to end the Cold War by coming to America and meeting president Eisenhower? Using exposition, contemporary texts, photo, and film, this video presents a very thorough chronology of the events before and during the famous 1959 visit. Political context, nuclear stockpiling; a new Soviet leader, the purpose of the visit, Eisenhower’s motives, Khruschev’s motives; Soviet reporting of the visit; repression in Hungary a concern; 19th Sept crisis, damage limitation; iconic moments – dancing, hotdogs, Garst’s Farm; talks – what was achieved? U2 crisis prevents Eisenhower’s reciprocation.
