B and D Publishing’s Scheme of Work on Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, a novel by American author Mildred D Taylor suitable for key stage 4 pupils.

The story is set in 1930s Mississippi and tells of the racial discrimination, prejudice and casual violence experienced by black people. The story is narrated by Cassie Logan, a nine year old black girl brought up in a loving, hard-working family. As a child brought up in such a loving, caring environment, Cassie finds it difficult to understand the harsh reality of life for black people.

This pdf workpack is 60 pages and includes commentary and questions on the novel, historical context, work on characters and themes and oral and written assignments.
