In this lesson, students review the following word parts in order to increase their vocabulary knowledge: semi, aqua, crypt, therm, hyper, hypo, ject, and mar. This packet begins with a general lesson on breaking apart words. Next, students are asked to try to define some words that have the word roots as they are introduced. Then, they are asked to draw pictures of the definitions to help them remember them. After that, they are given a long list of words that use their new vocabulary and challenged to see how many words they can use to write a paragraph. The last mnemonic in the packet is a word search template and students are asked to create a word search for a classmate, followed by a quiz to check retention.

Supports Common Core and Reading Foundational Standards. No instructional lesson plan needed. Simply print and teach!

This is a great activity for introducing or reviewing base words, prefixes and suffixes and a excellent resource for writing practice since it asks learners to apply their knowledge by writing sentences with new words.

Ideal for guided practice, group work, morning work, homework, intervention, Special Education, Adult Education, and enrichment. Also great as a summer review resource.

Answer keys included.

Note: This resource was created with my GED students in mind since studying word parts helps them become better test takers and reduces test anxiety.

Scaffolding makes this lesson easily adaptable to many levels of learners.

Finally, the best part is that this packet is fun! It has enough variety to keep students engaged, and by using such variation, it is a whole brain activity!

Be on the look out for more lessons to come!
