This is a 24 lesson scheme of work for the GCSE text ‘The Sign Of The Four’. A comprehensive and cohesive scheme of work for teaching 19th century literature. This can be used at GCSE, or in lower key stages to prepare children for the study of 19th century literature. This scheme has been adapted for lower ability pupils.

The scheme begins with an exploration into the Victorian era and crime fiction. We then move on to reading an adapted version of the text and analysing character and setting. The range of activities in the scheme are designed to keep pupils engaged, ensure understanding of a complex text, and create a sense of mystery by encouraging pupils to try and solve the crime. The scheme includes an end of unit assessment.
