Scotland and the Great War: Conscientious Objectors (Lesson 8)

This is a Scottish National 4/5 History lesson on Conscientious Objectors during WWI. While the content is appropriate for experiences of soldiers from across Britain, some activities are tailored towards the Scottish examination system. As I operate a mixed class, there are activities designed for both National 4 and National 5 included within the lesson.

In this lesson, students learn about the introduction of conscription, reserved occupations, and the varying reasons why some men became conscientious objectors. Through three individual case studies, they examine men who objected for political, moral and religious reasons, and students will find out how these men were treated. Students will then complete practice exam style questions, and if they finish early they have other task choices.
