I made this lesson for Year 6 mixed ability class in a prep school working towards Common Entrance. Would be suitable for KS3 or low ability KS4.
This booklet walks pupils through the opening description of Scrooge is Stave 1. (The first activity relies on them having an overview of the whole story first. I showed them a short animated version 14 mins long- see below. They then created a storyboard of the story to assess their understanding of plot.) In this booklet:
- Pre-reading quiz. This was taken from Stuart Pykes incredible ACC revision booklet.
- Vocabulary task: find the definitions of the words
- Read the opening description of Scrooge and highlight key quotes
- Quotation explosion- pick apart similes and metaphors for analysis
- An analysis grid (can be differentiated to give more help/take away the points. I made this for Year 6 in a prep school so slightly more scaffolded.)
- Extension task- taken from Stuart Pykes ACC revision booklet. Amazing vocab activity that explore etymology and give pupils the chance to debate. This could be set as a homework/prep task.
- APE paragraphs (can be edited to suit your class- PEAZL/What-How-Why paragraphs. APE stands for ‘Answer it- Prove it- Explain it’ as a basic way in to essay writing for Year 6 working towards Common Entrance.
I hope this is helpful.
Video for lesson before the booklet. Storyboards provided too.
