I planned this based on a play titled ‘Stone Cold’ for key stage 3/middle school students.

The play which originally stemmed from the author Robert Swindell’s novel is such a brilliant play - I strongly recommend this for hesitant readers/performers as the themes and the main character who is a teen is relatable.

Themes include:

  • Homelessness
  • Vulnerability
  • Mental health
  • Prejudice attitudes
  • Friendship

This scheme of work will provide opportunities for students to:

  • Interpret and respond to scripted drama
  • Improve awareness of use of space & level (staging) can be used to communicate meaning
  • Employ appropriate dramatic technique such as Direct Address (monologue), crosscutting, split role, verbal machine, thought and speech tracks.
  • Develop critical evaluation skills
  • Challenge students to consider an issues-based topic homelessness.
  • Develop ability to interpret a script
  • Develop ability to create a range engaging characters

*You may use this scheme of work as a source of inspiration towards planning social issue based Drama performances or transfer the varied drama techniques to other scripts/plays of your choice. *

Please note that each lesson in this unit plan was taught once a week (7 weeks). If you would like power points and the homework booklet check out my other resources.
