I planned this based on a play titled ‘Stone Cold’ for key stage 3/middle school students.
The play which originally stemmed from the author Robert Swindell’s novel is such a brilliant play - I strongly recommend this for hesitant readers/performers as the themes and the main character who is a teen is relatable.
Themes include:
- Homelessness
- Vulnerability
- Mental health
- Prejudice attitudes
- Friendship
This scheme of work will provide opportunities for students to:
- Interpret and respond to scripted drama
- Improve awareness of use of space & level (staging) can be used to communicate meaning
- Employ appropriate dramatic technique such as Direct Address (monologue), crosscutting, split role, verbal machine, thought and speech tracks.
- Develop critical evaluation skills
- Challenge students to consider an issues-based topic homelessness.
- Develop ability to interpret a script
- Develop ability to create a range engaging characters
*You may use this scheme of work as a source of inspiration towards planning social issue based Drama performances or transfer the varied drama techniques to other scripts/plays of your choice. *
