This is a whole 90 minute lesson exploring the structure of texts.
I have used it for Paper 1, question 3 in the new AQA GCSE English Language (8700) specification, but it can also be used for any other GCSE English courses that explore structure.
The majority of the lesson involves analysing an extract from The Lovely Bones, which my students really enjoyed. Their main task is to complete a chart identifying four different structural features and explaining how each one has made the text interesting. This task includes a teacher answer sheet.
Students also analyse the structure of a clip from the film version of Girl, Interrupted and the front cover of a magazine.
The main structural features discussed in this lesson are: non-chronological order, narrative perspective, past tense, flashforwards, semantic field, repetition and foreshadowing.
