Looking for summer subtraction from 100 fun maths games for year 3 & 4? These Roll and Subtract activities will engage your students as they practice their subtraction fact fluency, which is an essential mathematical skill. The games will help to memorize and recall maths facts easily and quickly. Taking away, or subtracting, will be something they will find fun to do as they race to get the most kites.
The games are for students to play in pairs. Use them as part of a subtraction lesson to practice these skills or as a stand-alone activity for students who need extra practice with taking away and prefer to play games rather than do lots of maths sheets. Checking that their friends have got the correct answer means that they have instant feedback if they have the answer right and if they disagree, they can work it out together.
Provide manipulatives such as Numicon or Dienes or a 100 square and number line to support learning, or encourage students to use their mental maths strategies to work out and find the answers. Use small whiteboards if necessary to illustrate how to arrive at the answers. Discussing strategies and explaining what they are doing will add to their learning experience.
Have an adult play with a student in a 1 to 1 scenario to discuss and explain how to subtract and strategies on how to do this e.g. if taking away 9 then take away 10 and add 1 etc., taking away the 10s first and then the ones (or units) or vice versa and any other strategies that may be helpful.

Here is what you will get:
  • Subtraction game - using 1 die – taking away from 100
  • Challenge subtraction game – using 2 dice - taking away from 100
  • Dice and spinners to choose from for each game
  • Instructions for the games
  • Counters to cut out
  • Backs for Games to make them look more attractive if you laminate and store them with other games in your maths centre
These games are perfect for lessons, extra subtraction practice, homework, supply teaching, home education or homes education. Students can play them with their parents, siblings and friends to show and discuss how they work out subtraction problems.
Prep is easy – Print, cut up and play. The dice will need to be folded and glued, if this takes too much time please use the spinners instead.
Students love learning in fun ways and these games will help to practice their maths skills so that subtraction becomes easier and quicker. They will make connections through a shared fun learning experience and increase their mathematical skills in the process – a win-win situation.
