This GCSE level lesson activity gives technical terms for language features often found in non-fiction texts. Pupils match these terms to a chart which gives definitions and examples of the language features.
All examples given in the chart are taken from the ten non-fiction texts which appear in the Anthology for Edexcel IGCSE English Language and are studied for Paper 1. These texts are: Danger of a Single Story, A Passage to Africa, The Explorer’s Daughter, Explorers or Boys Messing About?, Between a Rock and a Hard Place, Young and Dyslexic, A Game of Polo, Beyond the Sky and the Earth, H is for Hawk, Chinese Cinderella.
This activity could be done individually or in pairs as revision of the Anthology non-fiction texts.
The technical terms when added to the chart are listed in alphabetical order. To make this a more challenging activity, the chart could be cut up before being given to pupils.
Full answers are provided in this 5 page Word document.
