THE 2 D's OF MAPPING - USING DISTANCE (SCALE) AND DIRECTION

The map of Cayleton and its surroundings is missing quite a bit of detail. Students are given instructions on how to complete the map. These instructions are largely based on using the scale (distance) and the direction finder (direction). The instruction sheet and incomplete map are provided as black and white attachments so that, if you decide, hard copies can be provided. To further use the 2D's Sefton Safari Park becomes a focus. Students may be familiar with safari parks or "open zoos". This purpose of this Safari Park is to encourage tourism by providing a safari experience without travel to Africa/Asia. If you allow students to choose the animals (say 8-12) they will be more likely to show interest. Black and white attachments of the Sefton Safari Park and animal photos are attached. The extension into preparing a pamphlet/advertising leaflet which includes map with scale and direction has been used. You have quite a few resources to assist you. A final check map is provided. Aim for reasonable accuracy but remember the completed map is one possibility. Watch out for animals as you approach Sefton Park!
