Want to introduce percents of a number in relation to fractions and decimals, and enable your students to work out simple percentages? Calculating percentages can be really engaging when taught through the fun Maths adventure book “The Bark Park” by Lori Haskins Houran.

A fun, practical fusion of reading comprehension and Maths, the children will be super engaged with this lovely book and accompanying lesson. The practical activity has a real-world sense of purpose as the children are tasked with creating a shop out of classroom items and labelling them with % off signs to attract customers.

The beginning of the lesson dives in to the meaning of ‘per cent’ using fractions with denominators of 100 and 50 to ensure depth of understanding, and then extends to numbers that are more difficult to calculate using the method of dividing by 100 and then multiplying by the number of hundredths (%). There is an emphasis on 50%, 25% and 75%, as per the book, and so it is recommended that this lesson be used as an introduction to percentages rather than a consolidation.
