This set of 8 lessons helps students (aged 12-15) to build up an analytical essay about ‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by JD Salinger. Each lesson there are a variety of activities: reading, researching, discussing, practising analysis, reflecting on personal experiences and being a teenager, revising literary devices, considering historical context and intertextuality. Symbolism, Bildunsroman and themes are introduced and discussed. There is also a lesson on writing in Holden’s voice and another poster lesson in using the novel to chart Holden’s journey around New York.
