The Colour Monster by Anna Llenas is a fantastic book to help children learn about their emotions. I can be used to introduce a ‘daily emotions check in’. The daily check-in is great to do every morning as pupils enter the classroom as it prompts pupils to think about how they feel and gives staff the opportunity to identify any children who many feel a negative emotion and may not want to approach an adult to tell them.

I created this daily check in and the resources to introduce the story and have used them in KS1 and KS2. It has had a positive impact on children’s emotional awareness, and I have received great feedback from other teachers and parents.

The daily check ins can be set up in many different ways, including, labelling pots and children putting monsters in the pots (as seen in the pictures) or children can attach pegs on the synonym cards.
This download includes:

  • An introduction PowerPoint to the story
  • A Colour Monster Reading Comprehension
  • A ‘I feel … when?’ worksheets (for children to design their own colour monsters and think about when they feel different emotions.
  • Display resources for daily check on (Including: Images of each colour monster, synonyms print outs, mini colour monsters for children and tags for pots)
