The MV EXPLORER - also known as “The Little Red Ship” sank on November 23rd, 2007 in Antarctica after hitting submerged ice. This was during a tour of the islands near the Antarctic Peninsula. This was on a similar tour we had taken a year before. We remember this small exploration ship with great affection. We remember the places, the penguins, the zodiac landings and the enthusiasm of
the crew and guides on board. So, we were saddened when we heard of the sinking. On the other hand, it did seem rather appropriate that this ship should end up at the bottom of the Antarctic waters rather than being cut up for scrap.
This unit takes you on some of the highlights of the 2006 excursion on “The Little Red Ship”. Hopefully your students will gain some understanding of the high regard we had for that ship. Join the penguins. Stand on the ice pack. Experience the sleet and the volcanic nature of Deception Island. Soak in the hot pools on the volcanic beach. “The Little Red Ship” maybe gone, but it is not forgotten.
