The volcanic eruptions of Deception Island in Antarctica caused the evacuation of the Research Station at Fumerole Bay and the British settlement at Whalers Bay in February 1969. Survivors returning after the volcanic destruction were amazed to find the chinstrap penguin colonies fringing Whalers Bay and the very large colony at Baily Head still operating. Find out how the penguin survival was possible. This unit has a focus on the chinstrap penguins. It is covered against the background of volcanic activity and the human settlement history of an active volcanic area. This unit can link with other units dealing with geomorphology of the volcanoes; the history of settlement and the forced evacuation of 1969. The attachments provide opportunities to summarise the adaptations of the chinstraps.
