This is a HUGE 129-page novel study on the hauntingly beautiful book “The Raven’s Song” by Zana Fraillon and Bren MacDibble. This book is featured on the CBCA shortlist for Younger Readers in 2023.

The Raven’s Song is a thrilling story told from two separate perspectives which move together as the story progresses and then eventually intertwine. The main

character, Shelby, lives in the distant future. The world has been almost

destroyed by environmental neglect and pollution. Townships of 350 people –

no more, no less – live on self-sufficient, sustainable allotments of 700 hectares.

Shelby (and her best friend Davy) explore the world beyond their fences and

make a horrifying discovery.

In the not-so-distant future, Phoenix lives with his family in a dirty, dying world.

His brother makes a discovery of his own which changes the course of history.

This resource consists of a chapter-based comprehension guide (divided into “chunks” of approximately 20 pages at a time). The questions cover a range of comprehension skills, from literal to inferential, plus author purpose, comparing and contrasting, summarising, predicting and much more. A comprehensive answer guide is also provided.

Each section also has a creative response, designed to be high-interest, independent and engaging. These are often linked to the Creative and Practical Arts.

The text would be suitable for a whole class read-aloud for Stages Three or Four. It would also be acceptable for an extension group of Stage Two students.

There is a bank of ten Literacy Circle tasks, designed to be printed and laminated for future use. These involve a high degree of student choice, so as to be independent. All associated printables are also included.

Also included is a comprehensive chapter summary. This can be viewed a sort of “teacher cheat sheet” to follow the narrative of the story if you have not read the book yourself.

I have many other literature-based resources in my store (most of them Australian) so feel free to check them out.
