This is a bundle of resources I created to complement the book “Through the Magic Mirror” by Anthony Browne. I used this book as part of a larger series of lessons for an author study on Anthony Browne.

The unit was created for my Stage Two classroom but would work just as well with older students.

The book features the story of a fed-up boy named Toby who goes through a magic mirror and finds himself in an extraordinary, surrealist world. The art in the book is heavily influenced by the surrealism art movement, so I created an integrated Visual Arts/English unit, whereby students complete an art study on surrealism and contrast this with the artistic style of Anthony Browne.

The bundle contains:

  • teaching notes and a background to the unit

  • a comprehension guide with 12 targeted comprehension questions and associated printables, requiring students to dig deeply into the text

  • a focus on the artist Rene Magritte, whose art influenced Anthony Browne

  • a slideshow with a background to surrealism, featuring famous surrealist artists

  • 10 literacy centre tasks cards designed to consolidate learning about both the text and the art focus.

Anthony Browne MEGA bundle - 6 books - NO PREP - Visual Literacy - Comp.

This is a mega-bundle of six books by Anthony Browne. The books included are: * Voices in the Park * Gorilla * Zoo * Piggybook * Through the Magic Mirror * Silly Billy The focus of the book units is shared reading. The units of work were designed around shared reading sessions and, in particular, accessing student's visual literacy skills. The larger units of work are "Voices in the Park", "Gorilla", "Silly Billy" and "Zoo", which all contain literature circle task cards, linked Creative Arts activities, step-by-step shared reading guides and much more. I love using the work of Anthony Browne in my classroom, and my students thoroughly enjoyed these units of work, particularly the consolidation tasks with Creative Arts integrated throughout. This is the equivalent to WEEKS of literacy teaching and learning - we spent ten weeks in total looking at the work of Anthony Browne using these resources. Whilst I teach in an Australian context, these books are not linked to specific Australian content and would be well-suited to any English speaking classroom. Spelling and grammar are UK/Australian. I used these books in a Year 3/4 classroom but they would equally be suitable for older children. PLEASE NOTE: These resources were all genuinely created in real-time for my classes over the last two years. As a result, the units of work differ in content and structure. Please use the individual prices as an indication of the resources included (or simply look at the individual products). For example, Voices in the Park is a very comprehensive unit as we used this book for several weeks. It contains mini-lessons, literature circle task cards, printables, assessments and shared reading lessons. The "Piggybook" resource, on the other hand, is very simple because we only used this for shared reading without integrated resources. If you enjoy this resource, please consider leaving lovely feedback. It really helps little seller-mums like me out (and this will give you a great discount to use on future resources). Feel free to check out all the other Literacy resources in my store. Happy reading!
