This is a topic that I have taught to students as young as Year 7 (top and middle sets) for a number of years. The algebra is basic but students are amazed when you tell/show them that this type of question has appeared in a recent GCSE Higher Tier paper (Edexcel June 2017 Higher Tier Paper 2 Question 22 of 23). I have found it to be a topic that motivates students and the method can lead the curious to finding out the algebra to calculate the cubic nth terms and beyond. There are 4 questions for the students to answer on this homework and worked answers are included.
