This series of tasks and lessons is intended to give access to the key themes and characters of TKAM, building to an essay assessment on the relationship between Atticus, Scout and Jem, though it also looks closely at the theme of morality in the novel and the character of Boo Radley. Supporting worksheets, relevant key quotes and the Assessment task with an exemplar essay are included.
The Lessons start with our first impressions of Characters, Narrative Perspective and Setting – based on the early parts of the novel. But later sections on Boo Radley, Atticus Finch and the theme of Morality rely on quotation/extracts from across the novel. So, for some lessons, it is assumed that students have read the relevant parts of the novel but there is no particular need to do the sections in the order they appear in the powerpoint and you could pick and choose how to use the materials if you are reading it as you teach, or start off with the first couple of lessons while the students read further on.
