This MAIN product is a powerpoint presentation about: George Zimmerman fatally shot Trayvon Martin on February 26, 2012, in Sanford, Florida. On July 13, 2013, his trial for second-degree murder and manslaughter ended in acquittal.

There is also a 20 point multiple choice QUIZ with answer key plus a complete set of FLASHCARDS for reviewing the presentation. The Flashcards could also be used for testing purposes.

The author is a retired lawyer, instructor and textbook writer.

The following information is EXCERPTED from the main presentation:

That there was even a trial was remarkable since from the outset it was clear that Zimmerman had broken no laws as they then existed in Florida. Although there was talk about repealing the laws, it was just that, talk. Florida law has remained exactly the same as the night Trevyon Martin was killed.

There is not one factor which brings about this killing. It is a confluence of factors and Zimmerman is but one of those elements. It wouldn’t happen without him but the stage has been set.

In most states in America it used to be a felony to carry a concealed firearm. These laws have been steadily disappearing. It was no longer a felony for Zimmerman to carry a concealed gun because Florida is one of the states allowing this practice. Many Americans do not realize gun rights have expanded so much.

Florida is a “stand your ground state” and likely to remain so i.e., stand and fight, using lethal force to defend your life. If you watch American action films, you know the whole point is to engage your attacker. American law has long embraced this macho concept and is why the country still reveres the lifestyle of the Old West. If you find yourself in such an encounter, you can use lethal force to repel your attacker. This principle is embodied in every American tv show and movie. The guy who runs is seen as a coward. Nevertheless, many felt Zimmerman had a duty to flee rather than kill. Florida law is clearly a stand your ground and fight state and shows no inclination to change its law to something less forceful.
